Trump praised South Korean wood pen manufacturer Lee Jae-myung during his meeting, and its stock price rose by over 60% on the second day.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung held a summit with U.S. President Trump at the White House on Monday. A small incident occurred during the meeting, in which Trump praised one of Lee Jae-myung’s pens, unexpectedly causing the share price of South Korean pen company MonAmi Co. to rise to a 19-month high. On Wednesday (27th), it rose by 24% at one point, and the two-day increase was more than 60%.

Trump was fascinated by the pen during his first meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at the White House on Monday (25th). Bloomberg quoted local media JTBC News as saying that during their meeting, Trump spent nearly two minutes asking about the origins of the wooden pen and held it in his hand until the two entered a closed-door meeting.

Media reports indicate that Trump praised the pen, saying, “This pen is really nice,” “The handwriting is beautiful, and the thickness is nice.” He even asked his assistant to “get me that pen,” prompting laughter.
Lee Jae-myung then gave the pen to Trump, saying, “It will come in handy for your complex signature.”

According to the South Korean media Dong-A Ilbo, the brown pen uses a MonAmi nib, which is engraved with the traditional South Korean phoenix pattern and is handmade by Zenyle in Seoul.

MUJI loses lawsuit in mainland China; only 24 product categories can use the “MUJI” trademark

The Japanese lifestyle brand MUJI has been embroiled in a years-long legal battle in mainland China over a company’s prior trademark registration. Japanese media reports indicate that the court has ultimately ruled against MUJI, forcing the company to use only the “MUJI” trademark in China for some of its products.

The Nikkei reported that Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. has lost its lawsuit against the Chinese authorities for invalidating the MUJI trademark, which was first registered by a local Chinese company. Ryohin Keikaku currently only uses the MUJI trademark for products in the so-called “24 categories,” such as towels and bedspreads, and will continue to do so.

According to Ryohin Keikaku, the Supreme People’s Court rejected the company’s request for retrial in June, effectively defeating the case. In 2019, Ryohin Keikaku filed an application with the National Intellectual Property Administration of China to invalidate 24 trademarks registered by local Chinese companies, but the application was rejected. The company subsequently filed an administrative lawsuit in 2020.

The first instance trial in 2021 and the second instance trial in 2023 both rejected Ryohin Keikaku’s claims, and the company filed for a retrial in July 2024. In China, Ryohin Keikaku can only use the MUJI trademark for products outside of Class 24. Regarding Class 24 products, since the MUJI trademark is currently used, the company stated that “there will be little impact on sales.”

Japan’s hottest days: Tokyo breaks 35°C for 10 consecutive days, the most ever recorded

Even as summer vacation draws to a close, many Hong Kong residents are still traveling to Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reports that today, mainly in eastern and western Japan, temperatures will rise and clear. Tokyo will see temperatures exceed 35°C (a “scorching heat day” in Japanese) for the tenth consecutive day.

NHK reported that this was the 23rd day of intense heat in Tokyo this year, a record high. The Japan Meteorological Agency defines a day as “summer” when the maximum temperature is above 25°C, “true summer” when it is above 30°C, and “extreme heat” when it is above 35°C.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that as of 11 a.m. today, the temperature in Hatoyama Town, Saitama Prefecture was 36.3°C, Ome City, Tokyo was 36°C, Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture was 35.6°C, Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture and Furukawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture were 35.4°C, and Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture was 35.2°C.

From May to July, 75 people died from heat
stroke. In inland areas such as Kanto, temperatures exceeded 35°C from the morning.

The high temperatures are also leading to an increase in the number of heatstroke cases in Japan. According to data updated on the 26th by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, 59,000 people were hospitalized for heatstroke nationwide from May to July of this year, including 75 deaths. This figure is the second-highest since comparable data became available in 2015.

The Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Denmark was summoned for questioning over suspected secret activities by Americans in Greenland.

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation previously reported that at least three Americans with close ties to US President Trump and senior White House officials have recently traveled back and forth between the United States and Greenland many times, trying to push Greenland to distance itself from Denmark and strengthen its dependence on the United States by establishing private networks, infiltrating local society, and strengthening information collection.

Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen said on the 27th that any attempt to interfere in Denmark’s internal affairs is “unacceptable” and he has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the acting ambassador of the US Embassy in Denmark to ask the US to explain its secret activities in Greenland.

King Frederick X of Denmark recently visited Greenland. Associated Press
reporter Rasmussen said the Danish government is “fully aware” of foreign powers’ interest in Denmark’s relationship with Greenland, and therefore is not surprised by the aforementioned actions. He also stressed that any attempt to interfere in Denmark’s internal affairs is “unacceptable.”

On the same day, the U.S. Embassy in Denmark responded that the U.S. government “respects the right of the people of Greenland to independently determine their future” and that the actions of individual U.S. citizens “are not under the control of the U.S. government.”

Greenland, located northeast of North America, is the world’s largest island. It is a Danish autonomous territory with a high degree of autonomy, with defense and foreign affairs under the jurisdiction of the Danish government.

Since taking office this year, Trump has repeatedly threatened to acquire Greenland. In March, during a White House meeting with visiting NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump reiterated his intention to acquire Greenland and pledged to deploy more US troops there. Trump stated that the US needs to control Greenland to enhance international security. Greenland, with its rich mineral resources and strategic location on a vital shipping route to the Arctic, holds a crucial strategic position.
