7 Americans at US-backed Ebola isolation facility in Kenya, charity group says

Seven American aid workers from the Samaritan’s Purse charity are being quarantined at a controversial U.S.-backed Ebola isolation facility in Kenya, the organization said.

The workers are part of the organization’s 72-member Disaster Assistance Response Team deployed to the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo, the organization said in a statement to ABC News. The team includes 44 Americans, with the remaining members coming from nine other countries.

None of the seven quarantined employees have developed symptoms, the organization said.

Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse, confirmed the workers are being held for the standard 21-day isolation period.

In a statement, Graham said the workers are housed in large military tents in a fenced gravel area, sleep on military cots and receive food provided by the U.S. military. He added that he spoke to them by phone on Thursday morning.

“We are grateful to God for the incredible men and women who have been fighting Ebola on the front lines. To me, these are true American heroes and they do it because of their love for Jesus Christ, showing His compassion to people who are going through their darkest hour. We want to honor them and care for them well,” Graham said.

The Ebola quarantine facility — located at the Laikipia Air Base near Nanyuki, Kenya — was built to quarantine Americans exposed to Ebola in the DRC or Uganda for the standard 21-day monitoring period before they return to the U.S.

The project has faced strong opposition in Kenya. Critics argue that the U.S. is shifting the responsibility and potential health risks to Kenya, a country with no recorded Ebola cases. Civil society groups have questioned the lack of public consultation and proper approvals.

Kenya’s High Court previously ordered construction to stop. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was found in contempt after work continued, and he later announced an immediate halt to all activity at the site.

Despite the court orders, the facility was completed, and the seven Samaritan’s Purse workers are believed to be its first occupants.

ABC News has reached out to the Kenyan health minister and other Kenyan officials but did not immediately hear back.

The WHO has warned that the Ebola outbreak is spreading more quickly than any previous Ebola outbreak in the DRC. As of Thursday, the country had reported 2,124 confirmed cases and 828 deaths.

Earlier this week, the U.S. announced that American travelers in the DRC will no longer be able to fly directly to the U.S. Under a new process outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security , Americans departing from the DRC will only be able to return to the U.S. 21 days after leaving that country.

Previously, only non-citizens had been barred from traveling back to the U.S. from the Ebola outbreak regions, and American travelers were being screened at select airports for any signs of the virus.

Vance says US ‘fundamentally’ on right trajectory with Iran but ‘it’s just going to be really messy’

Vice President JD Vance expressed uncertainty over next steps with Iran, saying he expects it to be “really messy,” in an interview released Wednesday.

He also claimed that the U.S. would not be involved in an indefinite bombing campaign and declined to divulge his personal stance on the war.

“I don’t know exactly where this is going to go, but I think fundamentally we are on the right trajectory. It’s just going to be really messy, and there’s going to be a lot of stops and starts,” Vance said.

The vice president claimed the mid-ceasefire escalation from Iran was the result of a “freak out” among hard-liners within Iran over the increase in oil passing through the Strait after the MOU was signed, and that “pragmatists” in Iran are still looking to negotiate.

Vance said the U.S. is currently navigating a “delicate diplomatic dance,” adding that they are still “trying to talk to the pragmatists.”

Iran has released ‘wrongfully detained’ US citizen, Trump says

President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday that Iran has released a wrongfully detained American citizen – and added that the U.S. “appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!”

Trump said the woman was wrongfully detained in December 2024 but has now been allowed to leave the country.

Trump added that, “She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.”

In a statement, the woman’s lawyer identified her as Dena Karari, a U.S.-Iranian citizen who the lawyer said “has been trapped in Iran on bogus charges of collaboration with a hostile state and espionage.”

The lawyer’s statement added: “While subject to a coercive exit ban, she was interrogated dozens of times by Iran’s notorious Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and although never physically detained, she suffered enormous physical and psychological hardship.”

The lawyer said Karari ran a U.S. nonprofit called the Children of Mehr Foundation.

Trump’s announcement came as the U.S. and Iran have continued strikes.

“The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran,” Trump added in the post.

Latest round of US strikes completed, CENTCOM says

The U.S. has completed its latest round of strikes targeting Iran, U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on social media.

CENTCOM said the latest wave of strikes finished at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday.

“U.S. forces struck Iranian command centers, air defense sites, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten innocent mariners crewing commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement said. “CENTCOM used precision munitions to hit targets in multiple locations including Bandar Abbas.”

On Wednesday morning, U.S. forces struck coastal defense and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island during a 90-minute wave, CENTCOM said.

Kuwaiti air defenses intercept Iranian drones, army says

The Kuwait Armed Forces’ headquarters said in a post to X on Thursday that the Gulf nation’s air defenses were again “confronting attacks by hostile drones” launched from Iran.

Iran says that Hormuz is a ‘red line,’ it will not allow US to interfere

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a warning Thursday, saying it will not “allow” the U.S. to destabilize the region.

“We once again stress that under no circumstances and in no way will we allow the United States, as a foreign and extra-regional country, to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz. This is Iran’s inviolable red line,” IRGC spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfqari said Thursday.

The IRGC warned that if the U.S. carries out its threat to target Iranian infrastructure, Iran would respond with “strikes that will be more severe, more extensive and more devastating than ever before.”

Iran ‘continues to talk’ with US despite strikes, White House says

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Iran still wants to talk when pressed about the current state of talks on Thursday.

“Iran very much continues to talk to the United States of America and expressed that they want to make a deal with us because they are suffering devastating blows on behalf of our United States military,” Leavitt said.

Leavitt confirmed that thousands of U.S. servicemembers are positioned in the region to continue enforcing the U.S. blockade of Iran’s ports and ships.

“More than 10,000 U.S. sailors, Marines, and airmen, along with two aircraft carriers and more than 20 warships and dozens of aircraft, are executing the blockade mission as we speak,” she said.

“US CENTCOM has redirected two compliant commercial vessels and disabled one non-compliant vessel. So, look, the strait is open for ships that are not traveling to and from Iranian ports,” she said.

US says it struck Iranian port surveillance tower used to track ships

U.S. Central Command released video of a U.S. airstrike that it says destroyed a port surveillance tower that has been used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps “to track and target commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”

Iran has previously described the tower as a civilian structure.

“On July 16, U.S. forces successfully destroyed the Chah Bahar Shahid Kalantari Port surveillance tower, part of a maritime surveillance network along Iran’s Gulf of Oman coastline used for decades by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to track and target commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said.

“The destruction of the tower directly degrades IRGC’s ability to coordinate attacks on innocent civilian crew members. Furthermore, the strike protects freedom of navigation in regional waters for all vessels, except for ships attempting to violate the ongoing U.S. naval blockade against Iran,” CENTCOM said.

IRGC General says US destroyed MoU agreement, that Iran will enter offensive phase if America continues the war

Former IRGC commander Maj. Gen. Mohsen Rezaei said in an interview with Iranian state media on Friday that if the U.S. continues its military actions against Iran, Tehran will move to an offensive position rather than a retaliatory one.

“If America continues the war in the coming days, Iran will move from the phase of retaliation to the offensive phase, and we declare that the conditions for both negotiations and war are over,” the general said.

The IRGC general further stated Washington had violated all five preliminary clauses of the MoU, and that the “prediction that Donald Trump would tear up the memorandum of understanding came true.”

Fars News Agency also reports the general saying if America continues the war in the next two to three days, Iran will enter the stage of “full-scale assault and annihilation.”

Kuwait says Iranian attack wounds soldiers, damages military and civilian facilities

Kuwait’s military said on Friday that several members of its ground forces were wounded, and military and civilian facilities were damaged after what it described as an Iranian attack involving ballistic missiles and drones.

A Defense Ministry spokesperson said the armed forces had detected hostile ballistic missiles and drones in Kuwaiti airspace since dawn on Friday and had intercepted and dealt with them.

The military also said several vital civilian facilities were hit, including a power generation and water desalination station, causing a fire and damage to parts of the facility and electricity generation units.

It said debris also fell in several locations across the country, causing material damage but no civilian casualties.

Earlier on Friday, Kuwait Fire Force said via X that firefighters had extinguished two fires that broke out at separate sites in the south of the country after the locations were struck in “hostile” Iranian attacks.
