What to know about Taylor Farms amid cyclosporiasis outbreak

Fruit and vegetable producer Taylor Fresh Foods says it is voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market amid an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak across the country that has sickened more than 1,600 people.

As of Friday, the CDC said the multistate outbreak remains under investigation and is now linked to shredded iceberg lettuce that was served at some Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that its traceback investigation had identified a single supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico that was used at those Taco Bell locations.

In a statement, Taco Bell said it had taken “immediate action to voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states” following “ongoing conversations with public health officials.”

“We believe public health is a shared responsibility among restaurants, their suppliers, and authorities, and we are proud to have consistently acted quickly and proactively to protect our guests,” the statement read in part. “Taco Bell has taken precautionary action, and we encourage all relevant restaurants, retailers, and foodservice operators to do the same.”

The CDC and FDA said they are also investigating other cyclosporiasis illnesses that may be unrelated to the lettuce supplied to Taco Bell restaurants, “in collaboration with state and local partners.” Overall, there have been more than 1,644 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across the country, with 94 hospitalizations and no reported deaths so far.

Cyclosporiasis cases happen every year, but there have been more reported this year than in general.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a unicellular parasite that causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis.

In a statement to ABC News on Friday, Taylor Fresh Foods said in part, “While the FDA traceback is indicating a specific independent farm, which represents less than 1% of the U.S.’s iceberg lettuce supply, as the potential source of the outbreak, we have removed all iceberg lettuce from the region indefinitely.”

Taylor Farms, a subsidiary of Taylor Fresh Foods, supplies fruits and vegetables to many restaurants and grocery stores throughout the U.S., sourcing and processing the food before distributing it. The company said it sourced the lettuce suspected in the outbreak from a single independent farm in central Mexico, but it is removing all lettuce sourced from the region as a precaution indefinitely.

The company said it is “deeply concerned for those who became ill, their families, and the many Americans whose trust in the safety of their fresh produce has been shaken.”

“No other Taylor Fresh Foods products across the country are impacted,” it continued. “No Taylor Farms branded salad kits contain iceberg lettuce.”

“That trust is something we’ve worked for decades to earn, and we are committed to doing everything in our power to restore that confidence. We will provide continuous updates as new information emerge,” it added.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Taylor Farms shared a statement on its website, saying, “At Taylor Farms, the health and safety of our consumers is always our top priority. We are committed to delivering fresh, wholesome products that meet the highest quality standards.”

It added, “In the rare event a product does not meet these standards, we take immediate action to remove affected items from distribution and notify our customers.”

Here’s what to know about the Salinas, California-based company.

A leading, family-owned vegetable producer

Taylor Farms was founded by Bruce Taylor in the Salinas Valley in Monterey County, California, in 1995 and remains family-owned today, with Taylor serving as chairman and CEO, according to the company’s website.

Taylor Farms describes itself as “the leading global producer” of fresh vegetables, meal kits, and salads, and supplies restaurants with fresh ingredients. Today, the company operates production facilities in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe, according to its website.

In 2019, Taylor Farms acquired salad kit brand Earthbound Farm from Danone.

Past food safety issue

Taylor Farms was previously linked to a past food safety issue in October 2024, when the company voluntarily recalled raw onions that the FDA says were likely linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder sandwiches and a bacterial E. coli outbreak.

The outbreak ended in December 2024 and resulted in 104 confirmed illnesses, 34 hospitalizations, and 1 death across 14 states, according to the CDC.

In a statement in December that year, McDonald’s said the issue “had been fully contained — and any contaminated product associated with this issue had been removed from our supply chain as of October 22, 2024.”

7 Americans at US-backed Ebola isolation facility in Kenya, charity group says

Seven American aid workers from the Samaritan’s Purse charity are being quarantined at a controversial U.S.-backed Ebola isolation facility in Kenya, the organization said.

The workers are part of the organization’s 72-member Disaster Assistance Response Team deployed to the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo, the organization said in a statement to ABC News. The team includes 44 Americans, with the remaining members coming from nine other countries.

None of the seven quarantined employees have developed symptoms, the organization said.

Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse, confirmed the workers are being held for the standard 21-day isolation period.

In a statement, Graham said the workers are housed in large military tents in a fenced gravel area, sleep on military cots and receive food provided by the U.S. military. He added that he spoke to them by phone on Thursday morning.

“We are grateful to God for the incredible men and women who have been fighting Ebola on the front lines. To me, these are true American heroes and they do it because of their love for Jesus Christ, showing His compassion to people who are going through their darkest hour. We want to honor them and care for them well,” Graham said.

The Ebola quarantine facility — located at the Laikipia Air Base near Nanyuki, Kenya — was built to quarantine Americans exposed to Ebola in the DRC or Uganda for the standard 21-day monitoring period before they return to the U.S.

The project has faced strong opposition in Kenya. Critics argue that the U.S. is shifting the responsibility and potential health risks to Kenya, a country with no recorded Ebola cases. Civil society groups have questioned the lack of public consultation and proper approvals.

Kenya’s High Court previously ordered construction to stop. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was found in contempt after work continued, and he later announced an immediate halt to all activity at the site.

Despite the court orders, the facility was completed, and the seven Samaritan’s Purse workers are believed to be its first occupants.

ABC News has reached out to the Kenyan health minister and other Kenyan officials but did not immediately hear back.

The WHO has warned that the Ebola outbreak is spreading more quickly than any previous Ebola outbreak in the DRC. As of Thursday, the country had reported 2,124 confirmed cases and 828 deaths.

Earlier this week, the U.S. announced that American travelers in the DRC will no longer be able to fly directly to the U.S. Under a new process outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security , Americans departing from the DRC will only be able to return to the U.S. 21 days after leaving that country.

Previously, only non-citizens had been barred from traveling back to the U.S. from the Ebola outbreak regions, and American travelers were being screened at select airports for any signs of the virus.

Vance says US ‘fundamentally’ on right trajectory with Iran but ‘it’s just going to be really messy’

Vice President JD Vance expressed uncertainty over next steps with Iran, saying he expects it to be “really messy,” in an interview released Wednesday.

He also claimed that the U.S. would not be involved in an indefinite bombing campaign and declined to divulge his personal stance on the war.

“I don’t know exactly where this is going to go, but I think fundamentally we are on the right trajectory. It’s just going to be really messy, and there’s going to be a lot of stops and starts,” Vance said.

The vice president claimed the mid-ceasefire escalation from Iran was the result of a “freak out” among hard-liners within Iran over the increase in oil passing through the Strait after the MOU was signed, and that “pragmatists” in Iran are still looking to negotiate.

Vance said the U.S. is currently navigating a “delicate diplomatic dance,” adding that they are still “trying to talk to the pragmatists.”

US aircraft fired at oil tanker that attempted to violate blockade: CENTCOM

A U.S. aircraft fired at an oil tanker that “attempted to violate the U.S. blockade” on Iranian ports, U.S. Central Command said in a statement on Wednesday.

CENTCOM said the Curacao-flagged tanker M/T Belma was traveling in international waters toward Kharg Island when it ignored multiple warnings.

“A U.S. aircraft disabled the vessel after firing hellfire missiles into the ship’s smokestack. The ship is no longer transiting to Iran,” CENTCOM said.

The U.S. resumed its naval blockade on vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas on Tuesday.

“During the first 24 hours of enforcement, CENTCOM has redirected two compliant commercial vessels and disabled one non-compliant vessel,” the statement said.

Iran has released ‘wrongfully detained’ US citizen, Trump says

President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday that Iran has released a wrongfully detained American citizen – and added that the U.S. “appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!”

Trump said the woman was wrongfully detained in December 2024 but has now been allowed to leave the country.

Trump added that, “She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.”

In a statement, the woman’s lawyer identified her as Dena Karari, a U.S.-Iranian citizen who the lawyer said “has been trapped in Iran on bogus charges of collaboration with a hostile state and espionage.”

The lawyer’s statement added: “While subject to a coercive exit ban, she was interrogated dozens of times by Iran’s notorious Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and although never physically detained, she suffered enormous physical and psychological hardship.”

The lawyer said Karari ran a U.S. nonprofit called the Children of Mehr Foundation.

Trump’s announcement came as the U.S. and Iran have continued strikes.

“The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran,” Trump added in the post.

Latest round of US strikes completed, CENTCOM says

The U.S. has completed its latest round of strikes targeting Iran, U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on social media.

CENTCOM said the latest wave of strikes finished at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday.

“U.S. forces struck Iranian command centers, air defense sites, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten innocent mariners crewing commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement said. “CENTCOM used precision munitions to hit targets in multiple locations including Bandar Abbas.”

On Wednesday morning, U.S. forces struck coastal defense and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island during a 90-minute wave, CENTCOM said.

Iran says that Hormuz is a ‘red line,’ it will not allow US to interfere

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a warning Thursday, saying it will not “allow” the U.S. to destabilize the region.

“We once again stress that under no circumstances and in no way will we allow the United States, as a foreign and extra-regional country, to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz. This is Iran’s inviolable red line,” IRGC spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfqari said Thursday.

The IRGC warned that if the U.S. carries out its threat to target Iranian infrastructure, Iran would respond with “strikes that will be more severe, more extensive and more devastating than ever before.”

Iran ‘continues to talk’ with US despite strikes, White House says

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Iran still wants to talk when pressed about the current state of talks on Thursday.

“Iran very much continues to talk to the United States of America and expressed that they want to make a deal with us because they are suffering devastating blows on behalf of our United States military,” Leavitt said.

Leavitt confirmed that thousands of U.S. servicemembers are positioned in the region to continue enforcing the U.S. blockade of Iran’s ports and ships.

“More than 10,000 U.S. sailors, Marines, and airmen, along with two aircraft carriers and more than 20 warships and dozens of aircraft, are executing the blockade mission as we speak,” she said.

“US CENTCOM has redirected two compliant commercial vessels and disabled one non-compliant vessel. So, look, the strait is open for ships that are not traveling to and from Iranian ports,” she said.

Alerts issued in Kuwait, Bahrain

The Kuwait Army issued alerts Friday morning local time for “hostile missile and drone attacks.”

“The General Staff of the Army notes that if explosion sounds are heard, they are the result of air defense systems intercepting the hostile attacks,” the Kuwait Army said.

Alerts were also issued in Bahrain.

“We urge citizens and residents to remain calm, head to the nearest safe location, and follow updates through official channels,” Bahrain Interior Ministry said in a statement.
