‘They can go back to their country,’ DHS Secretary Mullin says as tensions rise outside Newark ICE detention facility

Tensions continue to rise outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, as activists and Democratic leaders clash with the federal government over conditions there.

A hunger strike inside the 1,000-bed Delaney Hall detention center has been ongoing since Friday after detainees alleged they are not being well fed or provided sanitary living conditions, according to activists.

“They’re given rotten frozen food, or in the case of last week, they found live worms in their food. We’re also hearing of people being denied toilet paper,” activist Catalina Adorno told New York ABC affiliate WABC on Tuesday.

Several protests have taken place outside the facility since the strike began, and ICE agents were filmed using pepper spray and batons against protesters who have gotten close to them, according to WABC.

The Department of Homeland Security has denied the allegations of a hunger strike and inhumane conditions inside Delaney Hall, which is currently holding 300 detainees. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday that there were “only a handful of individuals that was refusing to eat” because they allegedly wanted their “ethnic right food.”

“Well, they can go back to their country and get whatever food they want,” he told reporters. “The fact is, we’re giving them the calories they want. This isn’t Holiday Inn.”

Activist groups and several New Jersey Democratic Congress members, including Rep. Rob Menendez Jr., and Sen. Andy Kim, have pushed back against DHS claims and have participated in protests since Friday.

Menendez and Kim went inside the Delaney Hall detention center Saturday after repeated asks and said they saw the poor conditions and treatment of detainees firsthand.

“These are not the people that Donald Trump keeps saying that they were trying to lock up. You know, there is a woman that was pregnant that says she’s not getting full, OB-GYN care,” said Kim, who has called for Delaney Hall to be shut down.

“There is a woman that had a miscarriage that said that she did not get the care that she needed and was left to be able to manage that on her own,” he added.

Kim joined protesters again on Monday along with New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who said she was denied access to the facility multiple times over the past couple of weeks.

The governor spoke with some of the protesters, which included families of the detainees, and joined calls for the facility to be closed.

“My request for access to Delaney Hall was formally denied this morning, raising serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view,” Sherrill said in a statement Monday, in part.

“I have long opposed private detention facilities and will continue to advocate for the closure of Delaney Hall and against any expansion of mass detention facilities in New Jersey,” the statement continued.

“I came today to hear from families and advocates, and what I heard from them was heartbreaking. I will continue to hold ICE accountable,” the statement further said, adding that Sherrill would continue working with Menendez, Kim and others “to demand answers, protect constitutional rights, and ensure humane conditions.”

“The people inside Delaney Hall are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and members of our community. In New Jersey, we believe in the rule of law and that everyone deserves to be treated with basic dignity. We have a duty to safeguard the rights, health, and well-being of everyone within our borders,” the statement said.

Shortly after Sherrill left the rally on Monday, things became more tense between the protesters and federal agents. ICE agents deployed pepper spray and fired rubber bullets into the crowd as they clashed with agents, who were moving vehicles in and outside the facility, according to WABC.

Several people were hit with the spray including Kim, who was seen trying to de-escalate the situation.

“Instead of engaging with me and others about the poor conditions, ICE sent in an armored vehicle and a line of armed agents that only poured gasoline on the fire,” the senator said on social media Monday.

Mullin decried the Memorial Day protest and told reporters Wednesday that Congress members “probably shouldn’t have been there.”

Kim responded on social media to Mullin’s comments.

“This isn’t about me. This is about the detainees and their families, the lawlessness we’re seeing from ICE,” the senator said Wednesday. “I was willing to take a risk and I’d do it all over again to keep people safe.”

Lauren Bis, DHS acting assistant secretary, accused the New Jersey lawmakers of conducting a “political stunt.”

“We need these sanctuary politicians to stop peddling this garbage and cooperate with us to get these criminals out of their state,” she said in a statement Monday.

The protests and clashes continue, with federal agents deploying pepper spray against protesters who formed a human barricade outside the facility.

Mullin alleged in a social media post Tuesday night that law enforcement agents were sprayed with “an unknown chemical substance.”

Sherrill did not immediately have a comment about Mullin’s claims.

Protesters showed up to Delaney Hall Wednesday but the demonstrations were peaceful as of the afternoon.

Houthis launch 2 attacks against Israel, say they will continue

Yemen’s Houthis carried out a second missile attack against Israel on Saturday following an earlier strike in the morning, the group said in a statement.

The group said the attack “coincided with the military operations being carried out” by Hezbollah and Iran. The statement said the group would continue to carry out military operations “until the criminal enemy ceases its attacks and aggression.”

Trump’s comments on Epstein raise new questions about when and why they fell out

President Donald Trump this week spoke at length about his relationship with accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, but his accounts raise new questions about when exactly the two fell out and why.

Trump said on Monday that his relationship with Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of trafficking young girls and women, soured because Epstein poached some employees after he explicitly warned him not to do so.

Trump on Tuesday went on to say that Epstein “stole” young women who worked at the spa at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. “People were taken out of the spa, hired by him. In other words, gone,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

One of those workers, Trump said, was Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein accuser who said she was recruited by his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, when Giuffre was an underage teenager working as a locker-room attendant at Mar-a-Lago in 2000. Maxwell, convicted of sex trafficking minors and now serving a 20-year prison sentence, has denied the allegations. Giuffre died by suicide this past April at age 41.

“I don’t know. I think she worked at the spa, I think so, I think that was one of the people,” Trump first said when asked about Giuffre before going on to say more definitively, “Yeah, he stole her. And by the way, she had no complaints about us, none whatsoever.”

According to Social Security records submitted to the court during Giuffre’s defamation case against Ghislaine Maxwell, Giuffre was employed at Mar-a-Lago Club LLC in 2000 and earned $1,866.50 during that calendar year. The duration and precise dates of her employment at Trump’s club remained in dispute when the lawsuit settled in 2017.

Giuffre — then known as Virginia Roberts — subsequently went on to travel extensively around the world with Epstein and Maxwell over the next two years, according to flight logs kept by one of Epstein’s pilots that have been entered into court records in civil and criminal cases.

Trump’s comments came after the White House last week said Epstein was kicked out of Mar-a-Lago for being a “creep.”

Asked about the discrepancy between the White House’s reasoning for his split with Epstein and his own that it was over Epstein stealing his employees, Trump said on Tuesday “it’s sort of a little bit of the same thing.”

As he told reporters that Epstein poached young female staff, Trump said “people would come and complain, ‘this guy is taking people from the spa.’ I didn’t know that.”

“And then when I heard about it, I told him, I said, ‘Listen, we don’t want you taking our people, whether it was spa or not spa.’ I don’t want him taking people. And he was fine. And then not too long after that, he did it again and I said, ‘Out of here,'” Trump said.

But previous comments from Trump suggested his falling out with Epstein occurred several years later than that.

In 2002, Trump praised Epstein in a New York magazine profile of the now-deceased financier and convicted sex offender.

“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” Trump told the magazine. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

Then in 2004, the two men were rivals over a property in Florida as reported by the Washington Post. Trump ultimately won the property at auction.

In 2019, when Epstein was arrested on federal charges, Trump said he hadn’t spoken with Epstein in 15 years.

“I knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him. I mean, people in Palm Beach knew him. He was a fixture in Palm Beach,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I don’t think I’ve spoken to him for 15 years. I wasn’t a fan. I was not, yeah, a long time ago, I’d say maybe 15 years. I was not a fan of his, that I can tell you. I was not a fan of his.”

Asked at the time for the reason behind their falling out and why Epstein was banned from Mar-a-Lago, Trump responded: “The reason doesn’t make any difference, frankly.”

ABC News has reached out to the White House for comment on Trump’s explanations of his fallout with Epstein.

Iran still evaluating if and how they will continue work with IAEA, remain in NPT, Iranian FM says

Iran is still evaluating if and how they will work with the International Atomic Energy Agency in light of a new bill passed in Iran’s Parliament Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Iranian state TV Thursday.

Whether or not Iran will stay in the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty, also known as the NPT, needs to be investigated, Araghchi said. Iran will “act accordingly with the interest of the country,” he added.

One of the reasons Iran cannot maintain the same relationship with the IAEA as it had before the 12-day war is because the IAEA did not condemn Israel and the US’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, he said.

“The IAEA Director-General should have done this,” referring to condemning Israel and the U.S.’s attacks on Iran’s’ nuclear facilities, Araghchi said. “Attacking nuclear facilities is an unforgivable crime from international law.”

Araghchi said the law passed by Iran’s Parliament will be further investigated by the Iranian government and said the new law hasn’t completely blocked a path for cooperation with the IAEA.

“We need to perform more legal work on this law and decide how we can set our relations with the IAEA,” Araghchi said.

The IAEA inspections have stopped inside Iran, Araghchi said.

6 weapons dropped on Fordow went ‘exactly where they were intended to go,’ Caine says

Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said after the first bomb struck the target, “the pilots stated, quote, ‘this was the brightest explosion that I’ve ever seen. It literally looked like daylight.'”

“Unlike a normal surface bomb, you won’t see an impact crater, because they’re designed to deeply bury and then function … All six weapons at each vent at Fordow went exactly where they were intended to go,” Caine said.
