Trump meeting Zelenskyy at White House a day after conversation with Putin

Washington — President Trump is hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House Friday, a day after Mr. Trump had a long call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and announced that the two leaders will meet in Budapest.Zelenskyy is asking Mr. Trump for more military aid as the war with Russia continues. Long-range missiles sought by Zelenskyy are expected to be a focus of Friday’s White House meeting. Mr. Trump has been considering sending Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. But he also said he’d want to raise that possibility with Putin first, suggesting it could coax Putin to cooperate as Mr. Trump continues to try to bring an end to the war.

Mr. Trump said he discussed the Tomahawks “a little bit” with Putin during their phone call Thursday. But he appeared to downplay the idea of sending them.

“I will say to you, we need Tomahawks for the United States of America too,” the president said Thursday. “We have a lot of them, but we need them. I mean we can’t deplete our country.”

Mr. Trump had previously said the Tomahawks would be a “new step of aggression” in the Russia-Ukraine war. The missiles would enable Ukraine to strike deep within Russia.

“I might say ‘Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I’m going to send the Tomahawks,'” Mr. Trump told reporters earlier this week. “We may not, but we may do it.”

The last time the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents met in person was in late September, on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Mr. Trump and Zelenskyy spoke twice over the weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, ahead of Mr. Trump’s whirlwind Middle East trip to mark the Israel-Hamas peace deal.

Russia has given no indication it wants to end the war. And Ukrainian authorities said there had been another large-scale Russian strike hours before Mr. Trump spoke with Putin on the phone.

“The massive overnight strike — launched hours before the conversation between Putin and President Trump — exposes Moscow’s real attitude toward peace,” Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. Olga Stefanishyna said in a statement Thursday. “While discussions about ending the war continue, Russia once again chose missiles over dialogue, turning this attack into a direct blow to ongoing peace efforts led by President Trump.”

Mr. Trump in recent months has expressed frustration with Putin over the failure to end the war, though on a separate front, first lady Melania Trump said last week that she has worked with the Russian leader’s team to return Ukrainian children to their families.

Mr. Trump said “great progress was made” in his Thursday call with Putin, although he didn’t give any details.

U.S. and Russian advisers will be meeting next week in a location that hasn’t been disclosed yet ahead of the anticipated Trump-Putin meeting. The president indicated that initial meetings leading up to the meeting with the Russian leader would be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump and Putin’s ally Viktor Orbán enthuses over planned Ukraine war summit in Hungary

Hungary’s far-right, nationalist leader Viktor Orbán has hailed President Trump’s announcement that he’ll hold a second summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the war in Ukraine, in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, as “great news for the peace-loving people of the world.”Orbán is one of the very few European leaders who has kept close ties with Putin since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

He is also a key ally of Mr. Trump, having built a close relationship with the president over many years, helping to turn himself into a favorite European figure on the American right.

“The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is great news for the peace-loving people of the world. We are ready!,” Orbán – whom the European Union has accused of turning Hungary into an autocracy – said in a social media post on Thursday. “Preparations for the USA-Russia peace summit are underway. Hungary is the island of PEACE!”

Mr. Trump is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday following a long phone call he had Thursday with Russia’s leader. “I believe great progress was made,” Mr. Trump wrote Thursday on Truth Social regarding his conversation with Putin.

The Kremlin said in a statement Friday that Orbán had spoken with Putin on the phone to express Hungary’s “readiness to provide conditions” for the upcoming summit.

The date for the Trump-Putin summit in Budapest has not been confirmed, though Mr. Trump said Thursday that it would likely take place within a couple weeks.

It will be the two leaders’ second bilateral meeting this year, following in-person talks in Alaska in August.

That initial effort by Mr. Trump to end the Ukraine war yielded no tangible results. Putin has so far declined the president’s urging to hold a three-way meeting with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Meanwhile, the Russian military has continued its aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities, targeting infrastructure and killing civilians.

Before his announcement on Thursday, President Trump had voiced increasing frustration with Putin’s intransigence on negotiating an end to the war.

“I don’t know why he continues with this war,” Mr. Trump told reporters earlier this week in Washington. “He just doesn’t want to end that war.”

The Kremlin, in a Thursday statement attributed to Putin aide Yury Ushakov, said the Russian leader had given Mr. Trump during their phone call “a detailed assessment of the current situation,” which included noting that on the ground in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, “the Russian Armed Forces hold full strategic initiative along the entire line of contact.”

Why Ukraine may be disappointed by Hungary as a summit venue

Orbán’s government has often taken an adversarial stance toward Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian cause since Russia launched its full-scale invasion three years ago.

While Hungary is a member of both the European Union and the U.S.-led NATO alliance, Orbán has been a fierce critic of Europe’s financial and military support for Ukraine’s efforts to repel the Russian invasion. Hungary has halted all sales of weapons to Ukraine since the war began, and Orbán’s government has also prohibited weapons from Ukraine’s Western partners from transiting through the country.

Earlier this week, Orbán posted a promotional video on social media declaring that “Hungary will follow its own path, protect its sovereignty, refuse to send its money to Ukraine, and remain a haven of peace. We will not pay for wars that are not ours!”

Tension between Orbán and Zelenskyy has escalated dramatically in recent months.

Budapest has fiercely opposed Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union — a move Kyiv sees as a vital step in protecting itself against the potential threat of future Russian aggression.

Under EU rules, new states can only be admitted with the unanimous consent of all its existing members.

“Hungary has no moral obligation to support Ukraine’s EU accession. No country has ever blackmailed its way into the European Union — and it won’t happen this time either,” Orbán said earlier this month. “The EU Treaty leaves no room for ambiguity: membership is decided by the member states, unanimously.”

Zelenskyy was quoted in May by the Ukrainian Interfax news agency as calling Hungary’s opposition to Ukraine’s bid “dangerous” for the EU, “because that’s the sovereign choice of another country. Just as we have no right to interfere in Hungary’s affairs.”

Kyiv has also accused Hungary of illegally flying drones into Ukrainian territory. In September, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha posted a map on social media of an alleged Hungarian drone incursion with the caption: “Our Armed Forces have gathered all of the necessary evidence, and we are still waiting for Hungary to explain what this object did in our airspace.”

Orbán appeared to acknowledge the incursion late last month in an interview on a podcast produced by his far-right Fidesz party, while also questioning Ukraine’s independence, echoing a talking point often promoted by the Kremlin.

“Let’s suppose they flew a few meters in there [Ukraine], and so what?” Orbán said, according to the Reuters news agency. “Ukraine is not an independent country. Ukraine is not a sovereign country. Ukraine is financed by us, the West gives it funds, weapons.”

Sybiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, said in a social media post that Orbán’s remarks showed he was “intoxicated by Russian propaganda.”

While Hungary has participated in imposing several rounds of EU sanctions against Russia since the war started, Orbán has consistently called for greater economic relief for the Kremlin.

“It’s time to talk about sanctions! Did they bring the war to an end? No. Did they cripple the [Russian] economy? No. Did Europe manage to replace Russian energy from other affordable sources? No,” Orbán said in January. “The sanctions engineered by the Brussels bureaucrats achieved one thing: they destroyed the competitiveness of the European economy.”

Budapest has defied other EU nations’ efforts to wean themselves off a years-long reliance on Russian oil and gas — despite repeated calls from both Mr. Trump and Zelenskyy to do so to squeeze Putin’s ability to fund the war.

Research from the Center for the Study of Democracy, an independent policy think tank, shows Hungary has actually increased its reliance on Russian energy over the past three years. Hungary’s purchases of Russian crude oil increased from 61% of its total imports pre-invasion, to 86% in 2024, the study showed.

Orban is a key Trump ally

While Hungary is not perceived as friendly to Ukraine, President Trump will arrive to a warm welcome in Budapest if the summit goes ahead.

Orbán was the first and only EU leader to publicly endorse Mr. Trump’s first successful bid for the U.S. presidency in 2016, and the two have had warm ties ever since.

Orbán, who according to Human Rights Watch has used his party’s supermajority in the Hungarian parliament to undermine the independence of the country’s judiciary, crack down on independent media, demonize migrants and discriminate against LGBTQ people, was also effusive in praising Mr. Trump’s return to the Oval Office in January.

  • Hungary’s government pays citizens to start the “right” kind of families

“The Trump tsunami swept through the entire world,” Orbán said earlier this year. “It gave back hope to the world. We are no longer suffocating in the woke sea.”

In 2022, the EU said Hungary, under Orbán’s leadership, could no longer be considered a “full democracy,” calling it a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy.”

Mr. Trump has also prolifically praised Orbán’s strongman leadership, calling him “a great man and a very special person.”

Kremlin says Putin agreed to Trump meeting ‘in the coming days’

LONDON — The Kremlin on Thursday said Russia President Vladimir Putin agreed to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, though a specific date or location has yet to be announced.

Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov said that a “meeting between Putin and Trump (will take place) in the coming days,” adding that “work on the summit has now begun,” the Kremlin says.

Ushakov said that White House special envoy Steve Witkoff had raised the idea of a trilateral meeting between Putin, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy but that the upcoming meeting would only be between Trump and Putin, the Kremlin said.

“The venue of the meeting between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, has been agreed, and the Kremlin will inform about it later,” Ushakov said.

Witkoff met with Putin on Wednesday ahead of Trumps’ Friday deadline for Moscow to make peace with Ukraine or face severe sanctions.

Trump, on social media, suggested the meeting between Witkoff and Putin was “highly productive.”

“Great progress was made! Afterwards, I updated some of our European Allies. Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come,” Trump wrote.

Just last month, Trump said he would impose additional economic measures — including secondary sanctions on Russian fossil fuel export customers, the largest of which are India and China — if Putin failed to agree to a ceasefire by Aug. 8.

5 soldiers injured in shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia, Army sergeant in custody

A U.S. Army sergeant allegedly shot and wounded five other soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia, using his personal handgun, officials said.

The shooting at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area was reported at 10:56 a.m and the suspect, automated logistics Sgt. Quornelius Radford, was apprehended at 11:35 a.m., Fort Stewart said. All lockdown measures have since been lifted, Brig. Gen. John Lubas, the 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield commander, said at a news conference.

A motive is not clear, Lubas said, but the shooting involved the 28-year-old Radford’s co-workers and was at Radford’s “place of work.” He used a personal handgun, but it’s not clear how he brought it to his workplace, Lubas added.

The alleged shooter in today’s shooting incident at Fort Stewart is identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old automated logistical sergeant from Jacksonville, Florida.
U.S. Army

Lubas praised the “brave soldiers” who he said “immediately intervened” and tackled the suspect. He said they, “without a doubt, prevented further casualties.”

All five victims are in stable condition and are expected to recover, Lubas said. Hospital officials said two of the victims were rushed to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, which is a Level 1 trauma center about 40 miles from Fort Stewart.

Radford has been interviewed by Army investigators and is in pretrial confinement, Lubas said.

Radford, who is from Jacksonville, Florida, has not previously deployed to combat, Lubas said. He had been arrested locally for a DUI, Lubas said, noting the arrest was “unknown to his chain of command until the [shooting] occurred and we started looking into the law enforcement databases.”

Lubas emphasized that although it is still early in the investigation, he said they are not aware of the suspect having any prior behavioral or disciplinary issues.

Lubas also said he remains “very confident in the security” of Fort Stewart.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said on social media, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

“The Army Criminal Investigation Division is on site to ensure that the perpetrator of this atrocity, which is exactly what it is, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

The full circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear.

Access to combat firearms on a U.S. military personnel on base is highly restricted, with guns kept stored in an armory on the base. Firearm use is limited to only when soldiers are participating in field training, and the guns are returned to the armory at the conclusion of that training.

Military personnel are allowed to have legally registered personal guns, but there are restrictions on how they can be brought onto a base.

Russia’s ex-Transport Minister Roman Starovoy dies of suspected suicide hours after Putin fired him, state media say

Russia’s Minister of Transport reportedly killed himself just hours after being fired by President Vladimir Putin, according to the country’s state-run news agency, which cited the national Investigative Committee. A second senior Transport Ministry official reportedly died soon after, for reasons which remain unclear.

Roman Starovoy fatally shot himself Monday in his car in Odintsovo, a city west of Moscow, according to a statement from the committee that was reported by Russia’s TASS news agency.

“The circumstances of the incident are being established,” TASS cited the Investigative Committee as saying. “The main hypothesis is suicide.”

Forbes Russia reported that Starovoy, 53, died “presumably overnight between Saturday and Sunday,” citing an anonymous source close to state investigators. It was not possible to explain the discrepancy between the times of death reported by Forbes and the official Russian media.

Putin had dismissed Starovoy just hours earlier, according to a decree published by the Kremlin. No official reason was given, but ongoing Ukranian drone attacks on Russia caused chaos for air traffic in the country over the weekend, prompting the cancellation of hundreds of flights and stranding passengers.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted at least 120 drones over 10 different regions of the country between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Officials in Ukraine, meanwhile, said Monday that at least 11 civilians were killed and more than 80 others injured, including seven children, in Russian drone attacks. Russia has intensified its missile and drone strikes, including many that hit civilian areas, in recent days.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that over the past week alone, Russia had launched about 1,270 drones, 39 missiles and nearly 1,000 glide bombs at Ukraine.

Starovoy became Russia’s Transport Minister in 2024, before which he was the governor of the Kursk region on the border with Ukraine.

Another official reportedly “stood up sharply… and fell dead”

Soon after Starovoy’s death was reported by Russian media, a lower-ranking official whose job fell within the remit of the Transport Ministry, 42-year-old Andrei Korneichuk, was said to have died suddenly during a meeting.

At his office in eastern Moscow, Korneichuk, who was the deputy head of the Federal Road Agency’s Land Fund Department, “stood up sharply during a meeting and fell dead,” according to the SHOT news outlet, which is said to be close to the military.

“The medics could not help him,” SHOT added. The independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta said at least two other Russian government-linked news outlets had reported the same basic details.

The preliminary cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest, according to the media outlets cited by the Gazeta.

The two deaths come just days after that of the vice-president of Russian state oil company Transneft.

The body of Andrei Badalov, 62, was found “beneath the window of a house” in western Moscow on Friday, TASS cited law enforcement officials as saying. The state news agency said he had written a farewell message to his wife.

The cases are just the latest in a string of high-profile, powerful Russians dying suddenly, often in apparent falls from windows or other incidents.
