GOP Rep. Cory Mills accused of threatening to release sexually explicit videos of ex-girlfriend

Florida Republican Congressman Cory Mills is facing allegations from an ex-girlfriend that he threatened to release sexually explicit images and videos of her following the end of their relationship, according to a police report obtained by ABC News.

Lindsey Langston, a Republican state committee member and 2024 Miss United States winner, filed a police report on July 14 alleging that Mills threatened to release the videos of her after their breakup earlier this year and that Mills threatened to harm any future partners, according to the report obtained from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

In response, Mills said in a statement to ABC News, “These claims are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions,” and accused a former Florida primary opponent of “weaponizing the legal system to launch a political attack against the man who beat him.”

According to the police report, Langston stated the relationship lasted from November 2021 to February 2025 and ended after she saw media reports regarding Mills being allegedly involved in an unrelated alleged assault in Washington that reportedly involved another woman, an incident which Mills has denied and was never charged. The woman has retracted her allegations.

“Lindsey confronted Cory about the woman, to which Cory told her he was not in a romantic relationship with her and the press fabricated the story. Lindsey then found a social media account for the other woman and saw posted photos of her with Cory,” the police report reads.

After Langston moved out of Mills’ residence, “Cory has contacted Lindsey numerous times on numerous different accounts threatening to release nude images and videos of her, to include recorded videos of her and Cory engaging in sexual acts,” according to the police report.

The police report, which was first reported on by Drop Site News, also states that Langston provided police with text messages and Instagram messages between her and Mills, “which consisted of Cory threatening to harm any men Lindsey intended to date in the future.”

Langston also told police Mills misled her by claiming he was separated from his wife, though he remains married.

After Columbia County’s initial involvement with the police report, the matter was referred to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Anthony Sabatini is weaponizing the legal system to launch a political attack against the man who beat him in the primary, using his corporate legal office to push a narrative built on lies and flawed legal arguments – all to score political headlines. We have not been made aware of any report or allegations from law enforcement or the alleged complainant.” Mills said in his statement.

“These claims are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions. I have always conducted myself with integrity, both personally and in service to Florida’s 7th District. Out of respect for the legal process, I won’t comment further at this time. My team and I will fully cooperate to ensure the truth is made clear. I remain focused on serving my constituents and advancing America First policies.”

Sabatini, an attorney who serves as a County Commissioner for District 1, briefly represented Langston but no longer does. Previously, he lost a Republican primary for the seat Mills now represents. He also served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2018-2022.

Earlier this year, Mills, who represents Florida’s 7th congressional district, voted in favor of the “Take It Down Act,” a bipartisan law championed by first lady Melania Trump that the president signed into law in May.

The “Take it Down Act” was a bipartisan bill aimed at cracking down on the nonconsensual sharing of sexually explicit videos and photos, including deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence.

Kremlin says Putin agreed to Trump meeting ‘in the coming days’

LONDON — The Kremlin on Thursday said Russia President Vladimir Putin agreed to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, though a specific date or location has yet to be announced.

Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov said that a “meeting between Putin and Trump (will take place) in the coming days,” adding that “work on the summit has now begun,” the Kremlin says.

Ushakov said that White House special envoy Steve Witkoff had raised the idea of a trilateral meeting between Putin, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy but that the upcoming meeting would only be between Trump and Putin, the Kremlin said.

“The venue of the meeting between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, has been agreed, and the Kremlin will inform about it later,” Ushakov said.

Witkoff met with Putin on Wednesday ahead of Trumps’ Friday deadline for Moscow to make peace with Ukraine or face severe sanctions.

Trump, on social media, suggested the meeting between Witkoff and Putin was “highly productive.”

“Great progress was made! Afterwards, I updated some of our European Allies. Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come,” Trump wrote.

Just last month, Trump said he would impose additional economic measures — including secondary sanctions on Russian fossil fuel export customers, the largest of which are India and China — if Putin failed to agree to a ceasefire by Aug. 8.

5 soldiers injured in shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia, Army sergeant in custody

A U.S. Army sergeant allegedly shot and wounded five other soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia, using his personal handgun, officials said.

The shooting at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area was reported at 10:56 a.m and the suspect, automated logistics Sgt. Quornelius Radford, was apprehended at 11:35 a.m., Fort Stewart said. All lockdown measures have since been lifted, Brig. Gen. John Lubas, the 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield commander, said at a news conference.

A motive is not clear, Lubas said, but the shooting involved the 28-year-old Radford’s co-workers and was at Radford’s “place of work.” He used a personal handgun, but it’s not clear how he brought it to his workplace, Lubas added.

The alleged shooter in today’s shooting incident at Fort Stewart is identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old automated logistical sergeant from Jacksonville, Florida.
U.S. Army

Lubas praised the “brave soldiers” who he said “immediately intervened” and tackled the suspect. He said they, “without a doubt, prevented further casualties.”

All five victims are in stable condition and are expected to recover, Lubas said. Hospital officials said two of the victims were rushed to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, which is a Level 1 trauma center about 40 miles from Fort Stewart.

Radford has been interviewed by Army investigators and is in pretrial confinement, Lubas said.

Radford, who is from Jacksonville, Florida, has not previously deployed to combat, Lubas said. He had been arrested locally for a DUI, Lubas said, noting the arrest was “unknown to his chain of command until the [shooting] occurred and we started looking into the law enforcement databases.”

Lubas emphasized that although it is still early in the investigation, he said they are not aware of the suspect having any prior behavioral or disciplinary issues.

Lubas also said he remains “very confident in the security” of Fort Stewart.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said on social media, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

“The Army Criminal Investigation Division is on site to ensure that the perpetrator of this atrocity, which is exactly what it is, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

The full circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear.

Access to combat firearms on a U.S. military personnel on base is highly restricted, with guns kept stored in an armory on the base. Firearm use is limited to only when soldiers are participating in field training, and the guns are returned to the armory at the conclusion of that training.

Military personnel are allowed to have legally registered personal guns, but there are restrictions on how they can be brought onto a base.

Latest 8.8 magnitude earthquake: Russian volcano erupts, tsunami hits California

A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Pacific coast, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuations along the Hawaiian coast, and alerts were also issued along the U.S. West Coast.

The powerful earthquake, which struck about 85 miles off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, is one of the strongest ever recorded and the largest in the world since 2011 .

An 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Russia, triggering tsunami warnings for the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii.

American influence

In the United States, the initial tsunami waves crashed onto the Hawaiian island of Oahu, forcing people to evacuate.

Authorities urged residents to leave beaches and low-lying areas for higher ground and to take shelter on at least the fourth floor of buildings. As part of a statewide warning system, sirens will sound every 10 minutes across the Hawaiian Islands for three hours before the projected impact.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green told reporters earlier Wednesday that the state “has not seen any serious consequences” and called it “a huge relief.”

Tsunami warnings were also issued for other parts of the U.S. Pacific – coastal areas of Alaska, Oregon, Washington and California – but those have now been lifted.

Tsunami waves were recorded overnight in Monterey and San Francisco, California, but did not cause serious problems.

In California, tsunami warnings were issued for Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, as well as Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Tsunami warnings were also issued for the U.S. territories of Guam and American Samoa, but have since been lifted.

Crescent City, located on the border of California and Oregon, has since lifted all tsunami warnings. It was the last area in the United States to do so on Wednesday morning. Local officials said waves peaked at about 3.5 feet (10 meters) high, and no casualties have been reported so far.

The earthquake also affected travel; Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines resumed flights Wednesday morning after suspending them due to tsunami warnings.

Tsunami warnings and alerts around the world

In Russia, a camera captured the eruption of Klyuchevskaya Sopka, the region’s highest peak, with hot lava flowing down its western slopes.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning across northern Japan, forcing the evacuation of more than 2 million people.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned that a tsunami of about 3 feet high was expected to hit Hokkaido. The agency later lowered the tsunami alert level to a lower level, but said people still needed to remain vigilant.

Elsewhere in the Pacific, French Polynesia, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, Nauru, Australia and the Philippines issued varying levels of tsunami warnings, as well as advisories predicting strong currents and possible flooding, but these have now expired.

In Central and South America, tsunami warnings or alerts were issued for Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Colombia.

ABC News’ William Gretzky, Anthony Trott, Mireya Villarreal, Tanya Stukalova, Clark Bentsen and Jessica Gorman contributed to this report.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to correct a reference to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, which said Tuesday’s 8.8 magnitude earthquake was among the 10 strongest since 1900.

U.S. demands local governments return millions in coronavirus relief funds due to missing reporting

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The U.S. Treasury is trying to claw back COVID-19 relief funds from hundreds of local governments that received millions of dollars but never complied with requirements to report how the funds were spent.

The federal government is allocating $350 billion to state, local, territorial, and tribal governments as part of the American Rescue Plan approved by Congress and President Joe Biden in 2021. More than 30,000 governments, from the largest states to the smallest towns, will receive a portion of the funds.

Governments must disburse funds for specific projects by the end of 2024 and should submit quarterly or annual progress reports, depending on their population and the amount allocated. Most governments have complied. However, according to a GAO analysis, as of January of this year, approximately 1,000 major smaller governments had failed to submit any reports to the Treasury Department detailing how they had spent a total of $139 million in funds.

The Treasury Department has sent notices to local governments demanding the money be reclaimed, according to a report released last week by the Government Accountability Office.

In a letter accompanying the GAO report, the U.S. Treasury Department stated that as of June 24, 740 local governments had subsequently submitted reports and would no longer be required to repay their funds. Thirteen of these local governments had already returned the funds to the Treasury Department. However, 235 local governments still had never submitted reports or returned the pandemic relief funds.

The Government Accountability Office told the AP it does not have a specific list of governments that have failed to comply with the reporting requirements. The Treasury Department has not yet responded to AP’s request for a list of the 13 governments that have returned the funds and those that still haven’t reported on their use of the funds.

This isn’t the first time there have been concerns about the government’s failure to disclose how it is spending pandemic relief funds.

In October 2023, the Government Accountability Office reported that the Treasury Department had issued violation notices to more than 3,500 local governments that had failed to submit progress reports on pandemic relief funds. At the time, the Treasury Department refused to provide these violation letters to the Associated Press. Consequently, the AP filed a Freedom of Information Act request in January 2024 for copies of the violation notices and related letters. The Treasury Department has yet to comply with the request.

In its latest report, the Government Accountability Office said local governments’ failure to submit regular progress reports has limited the Treasury Department’s ability to determine whether funds are being used for permitted purposes.

Canada to recognize Palestinian state in September, prime minister says

Canada will recognize a Palestinian state at the next United Nations Assembly in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday.

The decision follows French President Emmanuel Macron saying France will recognize a Palestinian state at the UN, and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying Tuesday that his nation will do the same if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza.

The comments come amid a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and a growing chorus calling for an end to the nearly two-year conflict.

“Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security,” Carney said on Parliament Hill alongside Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that it “rejects” Carney’s statement.

“The change in the position of the Canadian government at this time is a reward for Hamas and harms the efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of the hostages,” the ministry said.

Following the U.K.’s decision on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement directed at the prime minister, saying, “Starmer rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism & punishes its victims. A jihadist state on Israel’s border TODAY will threaten Britain TOMORROW. Appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will fail you too. It will not happen.”

As of Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States has “rejected” France’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state.

“This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th,” Rubio wrote in a statement on X.

The news comes less than a week after Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, said the U.S. was cutting ceasefire talks short and bringing its negotiation team home from Doha, Qatar.

Countries announcing the decision come as the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, with a widespread hunger crisis reaching catastrophic levels.

Gut-wrenching images have emerged of malnourished children suffering amid the lack of food and other aid in Gaza.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health, seven people died of hunger over a 24-hour period on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths from malnutrition to 154 since Oct. 7, 2023, including 89 children. More than 60,000 have died in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Netanyahu and members of his administration have repeatedly denied there is a hunger crisis in Gaza.

“Israel is presented as though we are applying a campaign of starvation in Gaza. What a bold-faced lie,” Netanyahu said during an event in Jerusalem this week. “There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza.”

Kamala Harris says she won’t run for governor of California in 2026

Former Vice President Kamala Harris will not run for California governor in 2026, after months of considering the prospect of being the chief executive of her home state.

“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor. I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” she said in a statement released Wednesday.

The decision could give Harris greater leeway for a presidential run in 2028, an option she has yet to rule out. Harris said she would share “more details in the months ahead” about her plans.

“I have extraordinary admiration and respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service—service to their communities and to our nation. At the same time, we must recognize that our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, culminating in this moment of crisis,” Harris said. “As we look ahead, we must be willing to pursue change through new methods and fresh thinking — committed to our same values and principles, but not bound by the same playbook.”

Harris announced this decision after months of reflecting how to best contribute to the Democratic Party after her presidential election loss, she said.

“I am a devout public servant, and from the earliest days of my career, I have believed that the best way I could make a difference in people’s lives and fight for a better future was to improve the system from within. And it has been a profound honor to do that work and serve the people of California and our nation — as a prosecutor, Attorney General, United States Senator, and Vice President,” said Harris.

Over the past several months Harris has waded back into politics, appearing virtually at a young voters summit earlier this month and an abortion rights advocacy group in June. Her joint fundraising committee with the Democratic National Committee, the Harris Victory Fund, has begun fundraising on behalf of former North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s new Senate bid as well.

Harris said despite not running for governor, she was finding other ways to “remain in that fight” for “freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all.”

“I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans,” Harris said.

Suspect arrested after couple killed while hiking in Arkansas park: Police

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a double homicide at an Arkansas park, after a married couple was found dead on a walking trail over the weekend, authorities said.

James Andrew McGann, 28, of Springdale, Arkansas, was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of capital murder in the killings of Clinton David Brink, 43, and his wife, Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, Arkansas State Police announced Wednesday evening.

The Brinks were “fatally attacked” while out hiking with their two daughters at Devil’s Den State Park on July 26, police said. The children, ages 7 and 9, were not harmed in the incident.

Police previously said the suspect was seen leaving the area in a black, four-door sedan, possibly a Mazda, with a license plate covered by tape, police said.

Trump’s comments on Epstein raise new questions about when and why they fell out

President Donald Trump this week spoke at length about his relationship with accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, but his accounts raise new questions about when exactly the two fell out and why.

Trump said on Monday that his relationship with Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of trafficking young girls and women, soured because Epstein poached some employees after he explicitly warned him not to do so.

Trump on Tuesday went on to say that Epstein “stole” young women who worked at the spa at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. “People were taken out of the spa, hired by him. In other words, gone,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

One of those workers, Trump said, was Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein accuser who said she was recruited by his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, when Giuffre was an underage teenager working as a locker-room attendant at Mar-a-Lago in 2000. Maxwell, convicted of sex trafficking minors and now serving a 20-year prison sentence, has denied the allegations. Giuffre died by suicide this past April at age 41.

“I don’t know. I think she worked at the spa, I think so, I think that was one of the people,” Trump first said when asked about Giuffre before going on to say more definitively, “Yeah, he stole her. And by the way, she had no complaints about us, none whatsoever.”

According to Social Security records submitted to the court during Giuffre’s defamation case against Ghislaine Maxwell, Giuffre was employed at Mar-a-Lago Club LLC in 2000 and earned $1,866.50 during that calendar year. The duration and precise dates of her employment at Trump’s club remained in dispute when the lawsuit settled in 2017.

Giuffre — then known as Virginia Roberts — subsequently went on to travel extensively around the world with Epstein and Maxwell over the next two years, according to flight logs kept by one of Epstein’s pilots that have been entered into court records in civil and criminal cases.

Trump’s comments came after the White House last week said Epstein was kicked out of Mar-a-Lago for being a “creep.”

Asked about the discrepancy between the White House’s reasoning for his split with Epstein and his own that it was over Epstein stealing his employees, Trump said on Tuesday “it’s sort of a little bit of the same thing.”

As he told reporters that Epstein poached young female staff, Trump said “people would come and complain, ‘this guy is taking people from the spa.’ I didn’t know that.”

“And then when I heard about it, I told him, I said, ‘Listen, we don’t want you taking our people, whether it was spa or not spa.’ I don’t want him taking people. And he was fine. And then not too long after that, he did it again and I said, ‘Out of here,'” Trump said.

But previous comments from Trump suggested his falling out with Epstein occurred several years later than that.

In 2002, Trump praised Epstein in a New York magazine profile of the now-deceased financier and convicted sex offender.

“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” Trump told the magazine. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

Then in 2004, the two men were rivals over a property in Florida as reported by the Washington Post. Trump ultimately won the property at auction.

In 2019, when Epstein was arrested on federal charges, Trump said he hadn’t spoken with Epstein in 15 years.

“I knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him. I mean, people in Palm Beach knew him. He was a fixture in Palm Beach,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I don’t think I’ve spoken to him for 15 years. I wasn’t a fan. I was not, yeah, a long time ago, I’d say maybe 15 years. I was not a fan of his, that I can tell you. I was not a fan of his.”

Asked at the time for the reason behind their falling out and why Epstein was banned from Mar-a-Lago, Trump responded: “The reason doesn’t make any difference, frankly.”

ABC News has reached out to the White House for comment on Trump’s explanations of his fallout with Epstein.

GOP Rep. Tim Burchett still wants Epstein files to be released

Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett on Sunday again called for the release of the Department of Justice’s evidence against the late accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, part of a growing cadre of Republicans calling for transparency in the case.

Speaking with “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz, Burchett said he wanted the Epstein files to be released, but cautioned against releasing material that might expose the identities of victims and others in the files who may be innocent.

But Burchett pushed back against criticism leveled by President Donald Trump, who earlier this week called Republicans demanding the release of the documents “foolish” and baselessly claimed the Epstein files were a hoax concocted by Democrats.

“Was I a little ticked off he said that stuff? Sure, I was, but I’m a big boy, Ma’am,” Burchett said. “We’re playing in the big leagues right now.”

Trump has since directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to move to unseal grand jury evidence in Epstein’s case, which Burchett called “a start.”

“I don’t think we’re ever going to get to the bottom of … all of it, Ma’am,” Burchett said. “You know, this town doesn’t give up its secrets very easy.”

Asked by Raddatz if he believed Bondi should resign, Burchett said he criticized her communication on the issue but stopped short of calling for her to step down.

“I have a saying: It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. If she finishes strong on this, then I’m all for it,” Burchett said. “I’m sure the learning curve is steep, and I think she blundered in the beginning, I really do, as most Americans do.
